La Coquille, which means The Shell, is a small town with a population of 1,600 located in the north of the Dordogne. It is an area with a pleasant climate, from early spring until autumn the temperatures are so agreeable that is lovely to be outside. La Coquille is within the regional Nature Reserve Perigord - Limosin, a land of springs and chestnut trees and area devoted to live stock rearing, crop farming and traditional woodwork

 

There is a supermarket and various smaller shops such as butchers, bakers and patisserie. There is a market every Thursday morning selling fresh local produce. For eating out, there is a restaurant serving regional dishes and eat in/take out pizzeria. There are 3 bars, 1 of which has English proprietors. There are 2 pharmacies and a number of good doctors, 1 who speaks excellent English. Tennis courts are available for hire.

 

La Coquille is situated 45 minutes between the cities of Limoges and Perigueux. Limoges is the nearest airport and there are several car hire companies operating from here. It is also on a main line railway SNCF, with services to Limoges connections to Paris, Perigueux and Bordeaux.

 

The Perigord Vert is known for its rolling hills, forests, lakes, pretty villages and castles and renowned for its cuisine.

 

Almost every day there's a local market in one of the pretty villages. For those who like antiques and curios there are lots of brocantes and trocadores. Perigueux is especially known for its old historical centre. Limoges and its surroundings are famous for porcelain. The famous route of Richard the Lionheart and the beautiful castles are nearby. You can visit most of them. Other activities nearby include: canoe, golf, go-kart, tennis, biking, velo-rail, survival course, prehistoric caves and of course various musea
